Koh Samui, each year more and more tourists come to the 14 x 17 Kilometer big dream island. Around 40.000 residents live at this wonderful place. The most popular attractions on this island are the snowwhite powdered sugary beaches with beautiful palmtrees and the clear water of the gulf of Siam. The inland is overgrown with tropic plants and looks wonderful. All the waterfalls are great are a change to your beach holiday. In the box below you can see some of my Instagram Pictures from my last holiday on Koh Samui. There are a lot more pictures from Thailand on Instagram. Click HERE if you want to take a look at my account and get into the mood for travelling.

FACTS about the ISLAND KOH SAMUI

As mentioned above the island is 14×17 Kilometers big. Koh Samui is east to the Isthmus of Kra, around 35 Kilometers away from the mainland. The island is in the gulf of in the province Surat Thani. With a surface of 233 km² Koh Samui is the second island of Thailand – right after Koh Phuket. The inland is covered by a mountain landscape. A lot of beautiful beaches with millions of palmtrees make Koh Samui into one of the most beautiful dream islands and one of the most popular holiday goals in south east asia. There is a 52 KM long ring road around the island.

On Koh Samui you can find everything from cheap streetfood at the beach up to exklusive luxury restaurants. There are also a lot of markets with a huge choice of food and beverages. In most restaurants you will also find international dishes – or you can find Fastfood Restaurants like Mc Donalds or Burger King. In a lot of hotels you can also book half board (please don’t do this!). There’s also a supermarket at the corner of every street or a little shop where you can buy veggies, fruits and beverages.

There’s a lot for everyone. It doesn’t matter how big or tiny the budget might be. On Koh Samui there are Bungalows, Hotelareas, Resorts, Luxury villas and appartements en masse. I can only recommend our hotel to you, since we only stayed in this one when staying on Koh Samui. As you can see in my blogposts and all the pictures, I’m really a fan of the Tongsai Bay and I can really recommend it to you. We only had positive experiences and we had a really great holiday. The next time we visit Koh Samui (which will be soon hopefully) we want to stay at Tongsai Bay again!

SIGHTSEEING on KOH SAMUI

One of the most popular sights on the island Koh Samui is the Big Buddha at the temple Wat Phra Yai. The 12 meter high statue is in the north of the island Koh Fan. Koh Samui and Koh Fan are connected by a narrow dam and you can reach it by taking the street 4171. When arriving at Big Buddha there is a viewpoint with the view to the seaside and the Bophut Beach. You should plan some time to visit here.

Additional to all the other temples there are a lot of other sights and attractions such as the Grandmother and Grandfather Rock, the Tarnim Magic Garden on the mountain Khao Pom, a lot of wonderful waterfalls, viewpoints, muslim fishing villages, a zoo (when Koh Samui was flooded in 01/2017 some crocodiles broke out) and you can also see some butterflies as well. I listed some names of sights to visit on Koh Samui in the following:

All beaches, locations, attractions and hotels on the island island Koh Samui can be reached easily by taking a cab or renting a moped. A little more below you can find the phone number of a cabdriver who was very fair to us with the pricing. If you want to call a cab on Koh Samui, you should call this number. We didn’t find anyone with a better price!

Don’t stay at one place. The island is so beautiful and it would be too bad to not explore it. And it’s so easy to move on Koh Samui. Most beaches are open to anyone as well and you can visit them alltime. If you need special tipps, just leave a comment.

Good – and now so that you know everything from A to Z about Koh Samui, I’ve listed all my personal traveltipps. I hope I didn’t forget anything and that you know everything by now. If you have more Tips and recommendations, that should be added in this post – then please tell me! I’m happy about more information, because it won’t be the last time we visit there. It’s the opposite. We already think about when we should plan our next trip to Koh Samui.

INTERESTING FACTS for your KOH SAMUI HOLIDAY

» Traveltips: Everything from A to Z

Starting from Bangkok there’s a connection every hour to Koh Samui. The tickets aren’t very expensive and the flight is about 50 Minutes. The cheapest option is to take the nightbus from Bangkok, but it takes several hours and is not as comfortable like the flight. That’s why I recommend to book a flight (if it’s okay for your budget)! Just book very early (4 months prior), the tickets will be very cheap.

On Koh Samui there are tons of people offering you to take you to Koh Phangan, Koh Tao or the Nationalpark at every part of the beach. So if you plan daytrips – you won’t have to organise anything beforehand. There’s an offer at every corner. So you can book one day ahead. The boats also bring you to great snorkeling places, to Phi Phi Island and to Koh Nang Yuan. The offer is huge and for a little money the Thais will bring you anywhere you want.

IMPORTANT: Don’t book in your hotel – book on the streets or in a shop. It will costs a lot more in the hotel!

Our Hotel was in the Tongsai Bay but we walked to Choeng Mon Beach every evening. It’s not so far away – just down the Tongsai Road. On the street you can find a lot of great restaurants, shops, atms and massagesalons. In the following you will find my recommendations. To the letter C – there would also be the Chaweng Beach. Chaweng is similar to Fisherman’s Village – just more trashy. There are more bars and clubs then restaurants and shops. It’s for those searching for the nightlife. Similar to Bangla Road on Phuket. This was too much for us. Fisherman’s Village is more comfy and nicer.

This was our favorite bar. If you remember my Instagram Stories, you can remember us drinking yummy cocktails nearly every evening. Most of them ben.

In this restaurant thw Wifi is really good. It also works on the other side of the street when you’re in other restaurants. If you want to call home (via Skype or Whatsapp Call) – just stay here for a cocktail. Sending E-Mails was super fast as well! Even better then in a 5-Star-Hotel!

You should definitive plan to visit Fisherman’s Village when on Koh Samui. We really liked it. Much better then Chaweng Beach – the market there was like Phuket and the Bangla Road. At Fisherman’s Village there are a lot of stalls with junk and great souveniers. The food is A-W-E-S-O-M-E as well!

We had such good food there that we would have loved to come every evening. The food is fresh and cheap. Crunchy Chicken Bites costs around 50 Bath, crispy fried Prawns or octopus on a stick costs 60 Bath. Garlic Bread around 40 Bath and yummy juices costs around 20 Bath. We also found a stall where you can buy vegetarian Pad Thai – a big portions only costs 30 Bath! This is around 80 Cent!!!

Those deciding to arrive with an airport, will be guided to the taxi rank (right after the luggage belt). You will have to pay much more here then on the street. Down below you will find a really cheap contact. Just call there. We didn’t find a cheaper taxi.

The airport is really sweet and you will get free Popcorn, Snacks, Beverages and fast and stable Wifi. You won’t have to wait long for your luggage, since there is only one belt which is right next to the runway. The airport is really sweet. Look HERE at the pictures, so that you can imagine the airport.

You can find a lot of ATMs on Koh Samui. It’s the best to get some cash at the airport and then get the rest from ATMs. In front of the Supermarket 7 Eleven there were three ATMs next to each other and across the street there wer another two. So you won’t have to worry about this on Koh Samui.

There are also a lot of exchange offices on the streets – on the way from the hotel to the restaurant we saw 4 exchange offices and the way was less then 2 kilometers long. Which means changing cash is also no problem on the island Koh Samui. Just take your ID with you. You will need it to change some money.

The most beautiful hotel which is located best is the Tongsai Bay for me – you can read my hotelreview here. The bay alone is already so beautiful. Even though it’s so remote you can reach the village very fast and you can eat and shop very cheap. We just took a walk every evening.

At Choeng Mon Beach we’ve seen many big and wonderful hotels. We wanted to get to the beach and didn’t found a street, which is why we walked through some hotel areas. Looking from the beach you can find great Hotels and Bungalows. I can really recommend this part of Koh Samui to you.

You can also eat very well at Krust Thai Chorng Mon on Tongsai Road. The prices are really ok, but you will wait very long at Rush-Hour. The dishes are really good and hot. If you don’t get a seat at Orchid Restaurant (look at “O”), you can come here and have great lunch or dinner. You can also breakfast – but the choice is not that big.

This restaurant ist right next to Cocktail King which is why you’ll have great WIFI. WLAN :-)) But don’t order Cocktails here. They are much cheaper at King next doors. At Krust Thai Chorng Mon we had the best Garlic Bread. It was also cheaper than at Orchid Restaurant.

If you want to get a massage at Choeng Mon Beach, go to the ladies with the orange tshirts. The prices are the best. A 60 Minute Thai Massage costs only 300 Bath. On Koh Yao the same massage cost 450 Bath and in the hotel on Koh Yao it cost 1.300 Bath!! The massages are the cheapest in Thailand.

The massagehuts – beds are at the end of Choeng Mon Beach. The ladies in orangecolored T-Shirts can be seen easily. They will call out to you from far away. The ladies also have a shop on Tongsai Road. When it’s late you can book a massage in the salon.

The cheapest and best food at Choeng Mon Beach can be eaten in the restaurant Orchid. We went there several times and it was really delicious. A little below you can see some pictures of the food that I took, sorry I took some of them with my iPhone – I didn’t want to take my heavy camera with me all the time. A big (I couldn’t even finish ist) Portion of yellow curry costs around 120 Bath at Orchid. In the other restaurants it would cost 140 or 150 Bath, because the prices at the beach are higher.

I had a menu and I chose a fresh fish with garlic sauce (which was not on the menu) and veggie rice with a lot of pineapple – (it was not on the menu) and everythign was prepared wonderfully. The Thais were super friendly and they were happy about the tip.

R is for Roti – the classic Thai-Pancakes. Believe me – there’s not a better thai dessert then the crispy, hot and fatty pancake filled with bananas and a lot of chocolate sauce. We had the best Roti at Choeng Mon Beach. The owner of the stall was on Tongsai Road in front of the supermarket Familiy Mart vis a vis by Orchid Restaurant. You really have to try one with bananas or mango! We love this dessert and we already tried to make it at home. Unfortunately we didn’t found a similar recipe or weren’t able to make it like the Thais. If you have a recipe for me – please tell me!

Additional to Massagesaloons, Restaurants and Exchanging Booths you can also find a lot of supermarkets. We love to visit the Family Market or the classic 7 eleven. In both supermarkets you can reload your Prepaid Card. There are also cheap beverages and snacks in the supermarkets that you can buy for your hotels or the beach. We always bought water and some softdrinks as well as some instant soup *gg* They’re not really healthy, but really practical. Just add boiling water, wait and then enjoy.

After waiting and searching long we found a great contact of a taxidriver/bungalow landlord/ tour supplier/ allrounder. I think in Thailand everybody does everything for little money. His name is Joe and he is really funny. If you need a cab on Koh Samui, CALL HIM! It doesn’t matter where you want to go. He is available until 10pm.

Jokes aside, he is really flexible, casual and very funny – if you sit in the Taxi and he starts talking to you, you will remember my words. From the Tongsai Bay to the Airport (which was quite a long way) we paid 200 Bath. His phonenumber: 0612501501
