On August 28th of 2015 the Northern Lights Tour by Reykjavik Excursions started again. We joined and we weren’t disappointed. Some readers told me, that I wouldn’t see any northern lights in August. But we were lucky. We were lucky to see the northern lights from the aircraft. I’ve never seen something as fascinating as this. It’s so surreal and beautiful.

The Tour

The hotel pick-up was at 9:30PM and the tour itself started at 10PM. It was a 40-50 minutes drive by bus. Everyone was excited. Our tour guide was really nice and friendly. The time went by as he told us about the northern lights and Reykjavik. He also helped us with our camera settings and had a tripod with him. He took pictures with us and the Aurora Borealis and provided them online to download. The location we visited was unbelievable. It couldn’t have been greater. The full moon was shining, which made the sky even brighter.

11:30PM is the darkest time, so we waited 10 Minutes, 20 Minutes, 25 Minutes, 35 Minutes… and there it was… the sky turned green. The Aurora Borealis was there, looking nearly like a snake moving in the sky. It became brighter, darker, it disappeared and reappeared in violet. I only stood there staring into the sky. You won’t feel the cold anymore. You can’t describe it. When Manuel took my hand I had tears in my eyes. I wasn’t even there for 24 hours and then THIS. It felt like being on drugs. We stayed for about an hour. We returned at 1AM. Everyone in the bus fell asleep – just like us. We fell into our beds after returning to the hotel. It was a gigantic experience I never want to miss.
