Home sweet Home – Holiday at the Neusiedler Lake

Today is my second part of my „Holiday at home – Holiday at the Winzerhof“ Series. The first part was pretty popular and that’s why I look forward to tell you about my short trip to Mörbisch. Mörbisch is a little community with about 2300 residents at Neusiedler Lake in the north of the Burgenland which is about 50 minutes away from my home. In my opinion this idyllic place is the perfect starting point for a holiday in the region at Neusiedler Lake.

A trip to the lake was mandatory when I was still in school. Each year we explored the region with the national parc, the castle Esterházy, different wineries as well as the old streets of Mörbisch. When I was in kindergarden I already did my first ferry crossing from Illmitz to Mörbisch. That’s why this cooperation with “Holiday on a farm” and “Holiday on a winery” was so important for me! This is my home! The region I got to know and love very early. And even if I love getting into the plane to explore the other side of the world and stay in luxurious hotels, I also love my home as well. My roots are here.

Since there are no few blogposts about my home, I wanted to tell you about it today! If you have questions or if you need more information, just write a comment or an E-Mail. I’m happy when I can tell you more about my home! Just like in my first blogpost, I will draw a winner of a holiday in the Burgenland – this time at the winery! You can find all the information and conditions for participating HERE!

Disclaimer: Many thanks to the Team of Holiday on a farm for the great cooperation! Thanks to the Schindler family, Miss Zentgraf and to the tourisms board Mörbisch for this great trip! The opinion stated in this blogpost is 100% my own!

» Our Accomodation:  Winzerhof Schindler

We stayed at Winzerhof Schindler and can really recommend it. As you can read on the website this place is to “enjoy with all senses and forget your daily life. You can take your time, to relax in stylish ambience.“ And that’s true! A holiday on a winery is really great! In the middle of vineyards – you can start from your accomodation with a bike and visit great lakes or just take a walk and enjoy a good glass of wine in the evening.

Thanks to this atmosphere here, we really felt home. We were greeted with a glass of grape juice and wine in the middle of the arcade court which is full of fragrant Oleander – afterwards we drove through the mörbisch vineyards. They told us everything about the grapevines, the harvest and the maintenance of a wine garden. We were able to taste a lot of different kinds! Perfect preparation for the wine tasting at the wine cellar of Mr. and Mrs. Schindler.

The Winzerhof has 15 Rooms and Suites which are furnished very cozy and nice. What we really loved was that every room was named after a type of wine. The rich breakfastbuffet was filled with sausage, different cheeses and homemade and regional spreads. Everything was prepared with love and tha landlord as well as the mother in law cared for all the guests. Aw – and I nearly forgot – when we left – we got a souvenir photo. Such a nice and personal gesture!:-)

Excursions and Activities

» Our Programme  Wine Tasting, Biketour and a lot of food

Those who stay at a winery might also want to try the housemade wine! A Wine tasting and a guided tour through the wine gardens and the wine cellar are mandatory! It was very interesting to us to learn more about the process of producing the wine. My hometown is specialized in producing apricot liquor, so I only know about that. So it was new to me and very interesting to take a look behind the scenes and learn about producing wine.

Mister Schindler explained a lot about viticulture to us. Climate and good soil are conditions given by nature. The wine garden needs a lot of maintenance all year long, the vines have to be cut, foliage work has to be done and the soil needs to be fertilized. The work begins with cutting the vines in winter. Afterwards everything has to be patched up and they have to put the wires into the winegarden. With every blooming season the foliage work starts. The garden has be to be cleaned, fertilized and the revenue has to be regulated. The grape harvest starts in September and/or October. Producing wine is a long lasting and high maintenance process! You can buy his wines here!

Grape juice is good, but you also need to eat something! That’s why we also visited Bettina. Owner and passionate cook and gardener of Gut Zentgraf – which is also at Mörbisch. We harvested mexican minicucumbers (Melothria), bell peppers, Micro Cherry Tomatoes and yellow raspberries in her garden. We also prepared a delicious spread with fresh leek, herbs and nuts for our picnic at Neusiedler lake. You can find tons of homely taverns around the lake. You can order the typical “Brettljausen” with bacon, sausage, cheese and a lot of spreads and salads. Then add a wine to this menu and it will perfect.

Next to food and beverages the Burgenland has much more to offer! This region is also called the sunny side of Austria! This mediterranean climate makes this region around Neusiedler Lake makes it a tourist hotspot. You can enjoy the food, but you can also go into the lake for swimming or enjoy other types of water sports – as well as riding horses and biking. Mörbisch is a biking village near Neusiedler Lake! We had great weather on our bike tour with Ruth from the Tourismboard Mörbisch and were able to enjoy the peace and nature along the hungarian-austrian boarder!

On the website of the Tourismboard Mörbisch and of holiday at Winzerhof you can check for more activities. You can do much more then what I recommended :-) E.g. there is a yearly Surf Worldcup in April, from July to August there are sea festivals in Mörbisch and in November you can attend Martiniloben. A holiday at the Winzerhof is great for adults and wine lovers, but also for everyone who wishes to take some time off their stressful daily life and who wants to enjoy some relaxing time on the countryside.

As already mentioned above, I will write more detailled blogposts about the Burgenland soon! I planned a Wineguide, some Restauranttipps and an Eventguide. If you have special wishes or if you want to know more, leave some wishes here. Then I can plan – because I really wish to tell you more about my home.

I’d be happy if my Followers from the Burgenland would tell me what they love most about the Burgenland! What would you recommend to tourists? Do you have tips or do you know great Hot Spots that I’m supposed to tell my other readers about? I hope you like the pictures from Mörbisch!
