If you read my blog regularly, you might know that I love travelling and fashion. I’ve been asked a couple of times, how I’m able to travel, blog and work at the same time. Travelling the world without quitting your job? That’s not possible? Believe me, it is – I’ve been doing this for 8 months now.
I’m not judging digital nomads – people leaving their job to travel – I just want to show you, that it’s possible to travel a lot with a job. I got to know a lot of digital nomads and I’m really fascinated by them being so brave, ambitious and disciplined. But if giving up your job is not an option – maybe I can give you some tips.
Note: I’m not a pro or specialist – I’m just sharing my experiences.
1. If you think about giving up your job to travel, you need to think about it really hard before deciding. Do you want to quit your job, because you want to travel or are you not happy with your job? Maybe travelling is just to distract you from the real problem? If you hate your job or you are already in a bad mood on Sunday, this can make a huge difference. A good work-life-balance is really important.
2. Sometimes you’re not annoyed by your job, but you’re annoyed by the routine you’re getting in. Maybe you can change or optimize your workload?
3. In every job there are stressful times, as well as less stressful times. Maybe you can use your overtime hours for a short weekend trip? Try to talk to your boss. I’m using this possibility sometimes – just to relax or go on a trip from Thursday to Sunday.
4. Financial security and health insurance have a great relevance to me. For you, maybe your partner or family. If you quit your job, you have to find another solution. You can’t allow yourself to get sick then.
5. If you can decide about the dates of your vacation you should take holidays into account. E.g. last week – we had 2 days off – if you’re booking a trip you can save 2 days.
6. If you build your base or if you want to become an entrepreneur – you can also reduce your fulltime job to focus on your business. So you’re still employed, insured, but you have more time.
7. If travelling is really important to you and you can’t do anything I listed above, maybe you can try to find a job that has something to do with travelling. Maybe a travel journalist or any other job in the travel industry? I know that’s not easy, but it’s an opportunity worth trying.
8. Use your weekends! Most people don’t have to work on weekends. And if you do you might get another day off. Use the weekends for short trips.
9. If you don’t like your job and you think about searching for another one you might as well search in an area you want to travel to. Working abroad is normal nowadays.
10. If you’re planning a long trip you should think about what to do. Instead of staying at the beach for 2 weeks, you could do a roadtrip as well that ends in a couple of days at the beach.
As I already mentioned above – I’m not a specialist and I can only give you tips that helped me. I am employed, but I still travel. You can do that as well!
