Iceland – My Time Table

Iceland is THE destination right now. It’s pretty and exciting as well as diverse. But you need time and money huh? I will post about the costs next week. For today it will be my time table. For everyone planning a trip – this might be of help.

  • 1.Duration of your stay

We left Vienna on Thursday at 9PM and arrived at 1:30am in the hotel. It was perfect because we had the whole Friday for us. We returned on Tuesday at 10PM. We had 5 days. It was rather stressful so I recommend at least 6-8 days. I can recommend Niki or Austrian Airlines. The plane was only ¾ full.

  • 2.1 The Program – With a Rental Car

You can take a look at the following attractions by yourself (maybe with a Lonely Planet). It saves you money and time

Day 1 – Get a car

Get a Car – Safe time!
Choose a car online and take a look at the opening hours. Inform yourself about insurances as well.

Tour 1 – Snaefellsjoekull National Park

In the north of Reykjavik. In general the Snæfellsjökull-National Park is in the west of Iceland and the youngest of the 4 National Parks. They are about 200 km from Reykjavik.

Tour 1 Snaefellsjoekull Nationalpark
1. Stop: Landbrotalaug Hot Pot

The coordinates are: N64°49.933 W22°19.110. These hot springs are somewhere in the middle of nowhere. It’s just a field with a whole filled with hot water.

Tour 1 Snaefellsjoekull Nationalpark
2. Stop: Hraunfossar
 Waterfall

The Waterfall Hraunfossar is a great photo spot. We just stopped to eat something.

Tag 2 – Get up early to drive around!

Start your day super early!
The trip to Jökulsárlón is really long. You have to drive 380 km from Reykjavik and back.

Tour 2 – Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón
On the way to the glacier lagoon are many cool photo spots. You can pause a lot. That’s why it’s important to start early. It’s good if you arrive between 4-5pm to see the sun go down.

1. Stop: Gamla Laugin

We stopped after 1:15 hour. The Gamla Laugin or Secret Lagoon is a hot spring. There is not really something going on there. It’s clean and there are showers and towels to borrow. There is also a Geysir!

2. Stop: Landmannalaugar

You can take a break at Landmannalaugar. You might know this area from Pinterest. The red, brown stonewalls. Landmannalaugar is close to the volcano Hekla in the south west of Iceland and about 2:40 hours away from the Secret Lagoon. If that detour is going too far for you, you can do it on another day.

3. Stop: Skaftafell

Another stop you can do is the Skaftafell National Park. The area is really rich in contrast. If you have enough time, you should take a look at the Ice Cave!

And then you are there!
Driving there is really worth it. We passed a little village (Vik). It’s a great experience, you can also do a boat tour through the lagoon.

  • 2.2 Das Programm – Guided Tours

You can see the tours below. We got the tours via Reykjavik Excursions.

  • 3. Meals

We were a lot on tour– so there was not that much time to search for restaurants. We bought food at a local store. We bought snacks and breakfast to eat in the car.

I hope I was able to give you a peek into our program.
