In my last post I told you about finding cheap flights. The cheapest deals can be found with low budget airlines, where you travel with only hand luggage. I’ve got no problem only taking hand luggage with me. I want to show you how to pack your bag, save some space for about 3-4 nights with a tiny bag. I will travel to Amsterdam and I only paid 45 Euro.
»General Information:: Taking hand luggage
You can take one piece of luggage per person except little kids who don’t get an own seat and have to sit on their parents seat. You have to be careful about the weight as well. The luggage is not allowed to be bigger than 42 cm x 32 cm x 25 cm (WIZZ Air) and 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (z.B. Ryanair, Condor). If you’re not sure about that take a look on the airlines website or try the containers at the airport where you can check if the luggage fits
Attention: The cheap airlines are very strict about the size of your luggage. If it’s too big, you might have to pay extra
»My Tricks: Hand Luggage Made Easy
- The Onion-Look
Some might laugh, but this is no problem for me. To wear 2 shirts or pullovers at the same time or wear a pullover under my blazer and coat. Layering outfits is trendy anyway. And the air condition makes the plane very cold as well. That’s good when you’re on a city trip instead of a summer holiday.
- Minimize liquids
Shampoo, hair spray, deodorant, make-up products come in big packs. I gathered some tiny tins and bottles to fill in my shampoo, conditioner and make-up. You can make up a lot of weight like this.
- Roll Instead of Fold
Watch out that you don’t roll your clothes too tight, because you still have to fit in other things into the gaps. You can put underwear and socks into the gaps. For the pros – use a vacuum bag. Don’t put too many things in your bag if you want to buy something on your trip.
- Plan Your Outfits
Learn to renounce when packing your bags, which means: Packing! I plan my looks at home. Check the weather at home and plan your looks. I always decide for one outfit and vary with other components to create a second look. BTW: Lace bras are trendy, thin and they save space.
- Reduce technology
Ok, I have to admit that this is hard for me too. I like taking all my equipment with me, which is way too much. For city trips I only take my EOS and the Olympus EP-L7. One fixed focal length and a zoom lens, charging cable and a memory card, as well as my Mac + smartphone.
- Be Bold! Wear Whatever You Cant!
All the equipment I want to take with me takes a lot of space. That’s why I’m really bold and I just wear the camera around my neck and I put the little camera into my jacket as well as my smartphone and the charging cable.
