What Does an Iceland Trip Cost? – Detailed Cost Lineup

Since a lot of you asked me about the prices in Iceland, here’s a post. Iceland is extremely expensive. Everything is! Flights, Hotels, food (!!!). You either have to save a lot of money for this trip or you try to save money when you’re there. I will tell you where you can save money. If you still have questions, feel free to ask.

Costs in detail

I tried to book our flights really early. I wasn’t able to find cheap flights. I used the apps Skyscanner and OnTheFly everyday to find something. The cheapest flights were 230 EUR per flight per person, which makes 920 Euro for 2 people for a return ticket from Vienna. If you book right now, you won’t find a flight for less than 550€.

Important: Always choose Keflavik. That’s the international airport. Reykjavik has its own airport, but big planes won’t stop there.

You might have seen that we stayed at 2 different hotels. I was invited by (Radisson Blu Saga) and booked a second Hotel (Hilton Nordica) additionally. The prices would have been:

Radisson Blu: 465 Euro (with breakfast – 2 nights – 2 people) click here for the Screenshot!
Hilton Nordica: 473 Euro (without breakfast – 3 nights – 2 people) click here for the Screenshot!
————————–
Total: 938 Euro for 2 people – per person 469 Euro

There are a lot of cheaper hotels in Iceland. You can also choose hostels or AirBnb. I linked some locations for you below. I wanted to stay at the Hilton, because the Internet is superfast there. In most of the AirBnb appartements you’d have to pay extra for Wifi.

We had a rental car for 2 days. You need a car, because there is no train in Iceland, only cars, bicycles or busses. The bus only departs 2 times a day – so you won’t be able to avoid renting a car.

Important: Plan your vacation before you choose a car!

-> I WROTE AN ARTICLE ABOUT RENTING A CAR HERE <-

Extra Costs: Internet (3 GB) in the car, insurance, GPS etc.

We had a Toyota Rav 4 with Automatic gear, internet and full insurance. We paid 448 Euro

Food in Iceland is really expensive. We wanted to go to an Italian restaurant, where the dinner would have been 80 EUR for 2 people. Just for a little pizza and some pasta. So after we got our car, we went to a supermarket to buy some groceries. You can save tons of money like this.

Day 1: Breakfast in the Hotel
inclusive

Day 1: Lunch & Dinner
We had no lunch, because the breakfast was so good. I had a salad and pizza bread for dinner. Just like Manuel. We bought the food in a supermarket (for day 2 and 3 as well) and paid 59 Euro (€€€)

Day 2: Breakfast in the Hotel
inclusive

Day 2: Lunch & Dinner
We didn’t have lunch on this day either. And we had some panini & fruits for dinner.

Day 3: Breakfast
We bought something at a bakery (Coffee to Go + chocolate croissant and pretzel rolls): 17 Euro (€€€€€)

Day 3: Lunch & Dinner
We left out lunch, for dinner we called the room service for burgers and fries: 27 Euro (€€€€€)

Day 4: Breakfast
We had croissants and corny bars from the supermarket: no extra costs

Day 4: Lunch & Dinner
No lunch again, the Blue Lagoon is so expensive! We went to a restaurant at night though. We paid 37 EUR pizza and Pasta (+water) at Rossopomodoro.

Day 5: Breakfast
Corny bars + coffee + bakery goods: 10 Euro (€€)

Day 5: Lunch & Dinner
No Lunch again, Burger for dinner at Kebabhusid Burger for 30 EUR.

Total costs for 2 people: 180 EUR

If you want to see a lot you have to pay a lot! Here you can find all the activities and prices. I saved some money because of collaborations though (Northern Lights Tour, Golden Circle Tour, Blue Lagoon).

Day 1: Transport from airport costs: 18 Euro/p.P.
Day 1: Sightseeing (alone by car): Costs: 0,00 Euro
Day 1: Northern Light Tour. Costs: 6.400 ISK = 45 Euro/p.P.

Day 2: Sightseeing (alone by car). Costs: 0,00 Euro

Day 3: Golden Circle Fontana Tour. Costs: 12.900 ISK = 90 Euro/p.P.

Day 4: Blue Lagoon – Comfort Ticket Costs: 50 Euro/p.P.
Day 4: Transport Blue Lagoon & retour into the city: 25 Euro/p.P.

Day 5: Sightseeing (alone by car). Costs: 0,00 Euro
Day 6: Sightseeing (alone by car). Costs: 0,00 Euro
Day 6: Transport from Hotel to airport. Costs: 18 Euro/p.P.

Total costs per person: 246 EUR; for 2 people 492 Euro

We saved a lot of money on food and since we didn’t go shopping at all I didn’t really spend money. Therefore we took the bigger car – you have to pay gas as well (about 100-300 EUR). I think you can save up to 200 EUR by changing the hotel or taking a little car. We compared the prices: The Downtown Hostel Reykjavik takes 90 EUR per night, while we only paid 78 EUR in the Hilton. :o)

Total Costs

The total costs were 1.468,50 EUR per person!

2.978 EUR for 2 people.

Note: You don’t have to rent a car. That saves you about 500 EUR. You also don’t have to do tours everyday. The aurora borealis can be seen from the city as well. I would plan a minimum of 1.200 EUR for this journey. You can read about my timetable HERE.

Kosten Island Urlaub

Costs for a Lowbudget Holiday in Iceland

Total 500-800 Euro pro Person

The prices below are for 2 people and 6 nights. Not every lodging has internet or its own bathroom! Click on the name of the hotel and you will see the Booking.com website.

Reykjavik Hostel Village – 480 Euro
Hostel B47 – 560 Euro
Reykjavík Backpackers Hostel – 729 Euro
Fosshotel Baron – 740 Euro

Cheap Restaurants in Reykjavik

Buying food at the supermarkt „Bonus“ is still the cheapest.

The food in Rossopomodoro was good and low budget. I wouldn’t only trust the Tripadvisor reviews. The Rossopomodoro was rated poorly, although we really liked it there.

Kebabhusid Burger
